Toronto Film School’s Top 10 Memorable Moments of 2019

In This Article

  1. Here are our Top 10:

From runways and red carpets, to ad campaigns and accolades – with a new year fast approaching, we here at Toronto Film School wanted to take time out to reflect back on some of the most memorable moments of 2019 for our students and alumni.

Here are our Top 10:

1) 2019 was a big year for Gabriel Darku. The Class of 2015 Acting alumni landed a lead role in Netflix’s upcoming October Faction – a science fiction show based on a popular comic book series by Steve Niles and Damien Worm. Be sure to check it out when it premieres Jan. 23.

2) Shout out to Chanel Martineau, one of our current online Graphic Design students, who did such a great job designing the labels for a new winery, that the owner is flying her out to Montana for the launch in January. Check out her lovely work on all 14 of Unleashed Winery’s new varieties.

3) Have you ever wanted to work for one of North America’s largest independent video game developers? Well, Nathaniel Rudichuk, one of our recent online Video Game grads, did just that – and he did it while still a student. Congrats to Nate for landing a coveted job as a concept artist for Behaviour Interactive in Montreal.

4) 2019 marked a big year at the Toronto International Film Festival for a number of our TFS alumni:

– First up, Film Production graduate Danny Sedore had Flood – a film he helped produce – mark its world premiere during this year’s TIFF. Directed by Joseph Amenta, the 12-minute short follows a queer teenage boy as he takes his little sister on an adventure through the city for her birthday.

– But Sedore wasn’t the only TFS alumnus hitting the red carpet. Kudos also go out to Bruno Lyra, a Film Production alumnus and current TFS instructor, who also had a film premiere during TIFF’s 2019 Short Cuts Programme. Life Support, the short he helped co-produce, also boasted a crew comprised primarily of TFS students and alumni.

5) In other festival news, Film Production graduate Darcy Love had his latest short, Apprenticeship, make an appearance at not one, but two film fests this November – first at the Yellowknife International Film Festival, then the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival.

6) Marketing grad and Instagram influencer Luna Lindsay was chosen as one of just seven impactful women to participate in Ardene’s We Culture campaign aimed at celebrating love, spreading positivity, and standing together – empowered and united.

7) Prasanna Paul had a busy year – not only did the Film Production grad and his team do the VFX work on a fun, new Christmas-themed Pizza Hut commercial, but he also took home the award for Best Visual Effects at the CARE Awards for the film Beyond Hell.

8) 2019 was also a winning year for Writing student Monica Mustelier. For her film Weeping Willow, Monica won the Best Micro Cinema Short from the 2019 Cinefam Awards – a program that celebrates women of colour creators.

9) From ball gowns and bustiers, to capes and corsets – our Fashion Design graduates strutted their glamorous garments down the runway at the 2019 edition of TFS’s EMERGENCE fashion show.

10) And last, but certainly not least, Toronto Mayor John Tory joined as we marked the beginning of a brand new era at Toronto Film School with the grand opening of our new, 17,000-square-foot showcase location in the heart of downtown Toronto.
