Time Until Next Intake:

Toronto Film School Small Talk – The Film Student TV

In this week’s episode, the judging panel chose to feature Kyle Rogers’s “Small Talk” which explores the honest emotional interaction between strangers who engage in some small talk on the beach. Kyle also had the privilege of shooting on 35mm film (he was the only student to shoot on 35mm) which turned out beautifully and added to the artistic charm of the short.

Kyle’s film is a genuine representation of the social interactions we encounter every day. Actors David Patrick Flemming (Charles) and Jennifer Neales (Kate) do a fantastic job of portraying two strangers who have just met, and are attempting to break the ice in order to get to know one another. Kate’s extroverted personality coaxes Charles to converse further with her, and at the end we learn about Kate’s reasoning for her outgoing outlook.

During the two days of shooting, Kyle had to contend with the November weather but he managed to turn rain, snow, and a cloudy day to his advantage. Kyle took a big risk in choosing to shoot outdoors as opposed to in a controlled studio environment. Continuity was a constant worry as there were numerous dog walkers on the beach, as well as a loud wedding party close to the shoot location. In the end it paid off big for Kyle, and none of these obstacles seemed to affect his final cut.
