Announcement comes a day after TFS made MovieMaker Magazine’s 30 Best Film Schools in U.S. and Canada for sixth year in a row

Toronto, ON, July 18, 2024 – Advancements by Toronto Film School (TFS), including cutting-edgetechnical investments and a new collaboration with Sony of Canada ULC, will help prepare the next group of Canadian filmmakers and contribute to a robust local film industry.

Sony of Canada will provide TFS with the latest Sony professional cameras, hands-on training from Sony experts and will join TFS at quarterly events, such as workshops, masterclasses and panel talks at the campus. This also comes a day after TFS made MovieMaker Magazine’s 30 Best Film Schools in the U.S. and Canada for the sixth year in a row.

Sony will also give the school access to its newest gear, will support the Toronto Film School Film Festival and provide equipment for students.

At the same time, TFS is investing $2.5 million in new film school equipment – including 50 new state-of-the-art Sony cameras to enhance versatility.

“It is imperative that students know our goal is for them to be industry-ready after graduating,” said TFS President Andrew Barnsley. “What these decisions represent is Toronto Film School recognizing how the film industry is changing, integrating that evolution into our programs and being ready to contribute to the industry immediately, especially here at home.”

“Part of Sony’s success is recognizing excellence and that’s why we’re working with Toronto Film School,” said Mark Saddleton, Country Head for Sony of Canada. “From the staff to the students, this is a school that truly understands what the film industry needs, and we are excited to be a part of the next generation of filmmakers.”

Along with the Sony cameras, the school is also acquiring Sony student camera packs with Aputure’s latest sustainable LED light technology.

Canada’s screen industry has been increasing at an average rate of 6.1% every year – growing faster than the Canadian economy overall – and it’s estimated that 10,000 new jobs will have been created in Toronto alone between 2022 and 2027.

The growth, however, has come with a challenge – a skills shortage. Positions in post-production, lights, accounting, sound mixing, 3D, animation and grips are in demand.

“We know there are lots of positions available out there for those who want to work in the industry and one of our messages is we’re getting you ready for them, with the kinds of decisions we’re making today,” Barnsley said.
