Time Until Next Intake:

“Gender, Comedy and Film History” next up at TIFF Higher Learning

Last Friday, Oct. 3, was Toronto Film School’s first opportunity to take advantage of an amazing new affiliation with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Higher Learning program.

The Higher Learning initiative by the TIFF is an ongoing program that provides Canadian college and university students and faculty a forum in which to examine film, television, video, new media and gaming from a wide range of cultural, social, historical, political and technological approaches and disciplines. (Read our article introducing the program here.)

The inaugural event, “Adieu Goddard”, was a roaring success and a great time was had by all students and faculty in attendance, according to Christopher Lane, the Coordinator of the Film Production Diploma program at the Toronto Film School.

Those who missed it need not worry because on Friday October 17 there is another amazing opportunity for everyone at Toronto Film School to attend the TIFF Higher Learning lecture “Gender, Comedy and Film History”.

“It is these opportunities that as lifetime students of film we cherish,” Lane said. “I urge you all to take advantage of this and all the other opportunities that will be coming your way.”

The event will showcase feminist film historian panelists Laura Horak (Carleton University), Denise McKenna (University of Southern California), Alice Maurice (University of Toronto Scarborough), and Maggie Hennefeld (Jackman Humanities Institute). The lecture will explore women in silent film and cover topics such as race, class, gender, sexuality and stereotypes in the silent era.

Students and faculty who wish to attend the event are asked to contact Lane to arrange for tickets.

The “Gender, Comedy and Film History” lecture is free of charge and will take place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox at 350 King St. W from 12pm to 2:30pm.
